Would you move house for the Tesla Cybertruck?

As we wait for the Tesla Cybertruck’s potential UK release, we surveyed 2,004 Brits to find out how they feel about the vehicle. With its eye-popping design, this futuristic truck has captured global attention since its dramatic 2019 debut. But in a country where roads are narrow, parking spaces are tiny, and neighbours fight for space on the street, is the Cybertruck a stretch too far for the roads and driveways of the UK? Let’s find out!

A car worth moving for?

It turns out, 26% of Brits are eagerly awaiting the Tesla Cybertruck hitting UK roads, and some are even ready to go the extra mile (pun intended) to do so.

  • 15% of wannabe Cybertruckers said they’d move house to accommodate the car.Upping sticks for a vehicle might seem like a bold and expensive step, but for these Brits it’s a small price to pay for their dream car.
  • 29% of potential owners would look for alternative parking at home or work to accommodate the vehicle’s famously excessive proportions. Whether that means negotiating with a neighbour or finding a local public parking spot, they’re keen to make it work.
  • 28% of Tesla lovers would consider renovations, such as extending their driveway or garage. A bigger car, after all, might just need a bigger home to match.

Most are not quite sold...

While some are captivated by the Cybertruck’s bold design and unique appeal, the majority (74%) of Brits said it’s not quite their cup of tea. Their reasons are practical, and perhaps a little predictable:

  • It’s just too big. A sensible 44% felt the Cybertruck’s size would make it a struggle to drive on Britain’s roads or park in tight spaces. If you’ve ever tried squeezing into the last space in a multi-story car park or navigating a Cornish village, you’ll sympathise.
  • Price is a concern. For 39% of respondents, the $79,990 price tag was a major turn-off. A futuristic truck is nice, but not if it’s breaking the bank.
  • Elon Musk isn’t for everyone. A staggering 19% pointed to the divisive Musk himself as a reason for their disinterest.

Who’s driving the Cybertruck hype?

The survey laid bare a big generational divide when it comes to enthusiasm for the Tesla Cybertruck. Among the over-55s, a resounding 93% said they wouldn’t consider buying a Cybertruck. Perhaps the idea of squeezing the large car into a village car park—or even explaining it to their neighbours—is a bit too much to handle. Imagine the curtain twitching! Younger respondents, on the other hand, are far more intrigued as more than half (55%) of 25–34-year-olds expressed interest in buying the car once available on UK soil.

And it’s not just the Cybertruck getting the cold shoulder from older generations. When it comes to electric vehicles overall, 32% of British drivers said they weren’t interested, with nearly half (48%) of this EV-sceptic group aged 55 and above. Whether it’s a love for traditional gas-guzzling engines or just a slight reluctance to embrace change, older Brits are proving harder to win over. For now, it seems the Cybertruck is more likely to turn heads among the younger crowd than in Britain’s quieter cul-de-sacs.

London leads the charge

When it comes to Cybertruck enthusiasm, Londoners are leading the way. In London, 50% of respondents said they’d consider buying a Tesla Cybertruck, nearly double the national average of 26%. This might seem surprising given the city’s well-known parking challenges—especially when you consider that 43% of cars in London are parked kerbside.

Perhaps it’s the truck’s attention-grabbing design and futuristic appeal that has Londoners picturing themselves cruising down King’s Road. Or perhaps Londoners, accustomed to the city’s bustling, crowded streets, see the Cybertruck as the ultimate way to stand out amidst the chaos.

Conclusion: Is the Cybertruck fit for the UK?

The Tesla Cybertruck has divided opinion in the UK. For some, it’s worth making space for, but for most its size fees impractical for Britain’s tight roads and small parking spaces.

Whatever side of the fence you sit on, one thing’s for certain, the Cybertruck will not go unnoticed and has already cemented its place as a talking point for the future of motoring.
